The Surratt Beauty Lipslique Lipsticks in Eglantine and Oh L’Amour were the highlight of my Sephora VIB Sale Haul. They’re officially described as “an alternative to lipstick.” I’d say that would be true a couple decades ago, but there are so many different formulas on the market today.
I purchased two Lipsliques after reading several glowing recommendations and a few meh reviews. I probably should have picked up one colour to start, but I couldn’t decide between a Eglantine (described as a “deep wild rose,” it seemed like it would be the perfect addition to my rosewood collection) and Oh L’Amour (ever since Glossier Zip broke my heart, I have been pining for a sheer, wearable red). Luckily, both colours surpassed my expectations and I’m pleased with the formula.
I’m still in the honeymoon phase (it’s only been a month!), but these lipsticks bring me so much joy. They’re very comfortable, lightweight (kind of like a light balm), and lightly moisturizing. You can sheer them out or build up the colour, and they look great at any level of opacity. They last for a surprisingly long time while talking, drinking, and even eating a light snack. They fade gracefully, which is the most important factor for me. If some lipstick rubs off, you can easily redistribute it by rubbing your lips together. The lipstick leaves an excellent stain; check out the picture below. You don’t have to worry about the colour settling into lines, bleeding, smearing around your face, or creating an unflattering lipliner-only look. The Lipsliques offer everything I want in a lipstick to wear to work or casual engagements.
If you’re expecting the pigmentation of a NARS Audacious lipstick or the lasting power of a matte lipstick, you will be disappointed. This formula is a cross between an excellent tinted balm and an excellent lipstick. I love it. I prefer this over sheer lipsticks from YSL and Tom Ford.
The packaging is the worst aspect of this product. It’s not awful, but it’s a light plastic that feels a bit cheap. The twist-up mechanism does not retract. Luckily, only a teeny bit twists up with each audible click, but it’s still annoying. It’s 2017. You can do better, Troy.
Considering the meh packaging and the small amount of product in the tube (1.6g or 0.05oz), I do feel that the Lipsliques are overpriced. However, I really enjoy using these and will most likely repurchase these shades and perhaps other colours in the future.
Thanks for reading! What have you enjoyed from Surratt?
I definitely agree that these are overpriced! I was given my beloved Perfectionniste as a gift, and I don’t think I ever would have tried the formula (at $49aud!) otherwise. They are a treat to use, though. It will be my good luck interview/exam/impress people lipstick until it dies

I completely agree 🙂 Luckily, these are much cheaper in Canada ($37 CAD). Let me know if you ever need help getting beauty products from the great white north – I don’t mind sending you some.

God, considering that the Australian and Canadian dollars are almost 1:1, that’s obscenely cheap! Too bad shipping is a total nightmare

Yup. The CAD fell really fast (we used to be a fair bit higher than the AUD, at least when I was in high school), and our prices haven’t quite caught up yet. However, makeup in Australia has always been crazily marked up.

Yes, I’m in Canada! Both Canadian and US Sephoras stock Surratt 🙂

The Lipsliques remind me of the discontinued Dior Rouge Sérum de Rouge lipsticks. It was a sheer, tinted lip balm-like formula, but I don’t remember if the shade I had stained or not. It had that annoying non-retractable clicky packaging too… 😡

They sound very similar! Luckily, only a tiny bit comes up with each click, so I don’t mind too much.
