YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain in 5 Rosewood Gang.

The YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain is one of the few products I would actually repurchase if I lost. As much as I love trying new things, I need this to stay in my vanity forever. It’s one of the few products that lives up to its description: “A lightweight lip stain with a revolutionary formula for ultra-matte, high impact colour and a lightweight, naked-lip feel.”

I wasn’t interested in this launch at first, even after swatching the range at Sephora. When I hung out with my friend Jess four months ago, she wore this to lunch and an event, and it lasted (and looked amazing!) the entire time. That very same afternoon, we went to Sephora and I purchased the shade Rosewood Gang. (See her review here and her swatches here.)

Rosewood Gang is described as a “deep mauve pink,” but I’d say it’s more of a berry or light plum than a mauve, at least on my lips anyway. I’ve heard too many “this is a warm-nude-peachy-apricot-mauvey-plum-greige” descriptions that I can’t describe colours properly anymore. This is a bit brighter than I typically wear, but it’s still within my realm of comfort. You can see swatch comparisons here and in the images below.

I’m not really one to talk about applicators because I genuinely don’t care. I have poor hand-eye coordination and I’m not very patient, so I’m prepared to clean up whatever mess I make as I apply lipstick like a toddler on a sugar high. This applicator helps me apply lipstick like an adult. Look at the images below. The applicator holds the perfect amount of product and it’s so precise. After getting used to this, I’m now hyper aware of every subpar applicator in my collection.

Lipsticks that come in liquid form are classified differently depending on their properties. There is a lot of confusion and deception on this topic, which is taken very seriously by some people. This product is described as a lip stain, and I personally feel that that is accurate because it leaves a stain that is THE ACTUAL COLOUR OF THE LIPSTICK, unlike another popular lip stain. I love that it fades gracefully. If you’re interested, I compared it to the Dior Addict Lip Tattoo here and to the Marc Beauty Liquid Lip Crème, Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet, and Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick here (with swatches!).

I would recommend applying a thin layer, otherwise the lip stain won’t dry down and it will transfer. You may still get a bit of transfer anyway, but enough stays on the lips that it’s negligible. Although this claims to be matte, I’d say it’s more semi-matte (i.e., my lips still reflect a bit of light). I don’t find this drying unless my lips are already chapped and peeling, in which case I would wear any lip product that’s not an intensive balm anyway. It’s not as hydrating as some of my other favourite lip products, but it’s still very comfortable.

Overall, I love this product and I’m actually considering purchasing a few other shades. I do want to purchase one of the Chanel Rouge Allure Ink lipsticks to compare, but I also really want to buy another one of these. And I want to buy one of the YSL Volupté Liquid Balms because I have such great luck with YSL lip products, even though I’m not really a fan of the packaging.

Have you tried this? Is this something you would try? I’d love to hear what you think!

Thanks for reading!
