NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer | Review and Comparison

I’ve never been a huge fan of concealer. I love the idea of it, but I’ve never been able to find one that blended naturally into my skin. I have a rotation of concealers that I use regularly because they’re “good enough” to get the job done, but I have never been super happy with how they look on my skin. The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is great, but it can end up looking cakey by the end of the day, and it doesn’t always blend well with other base products. I love using the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in the summer when my skin is at its oiliest, but the texture can be frustrating to work with. The MAC Pro Longwear concealer dispenses too much product and it’s difficult to blend. One day the NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer walked into my life, and everything changed…

Okay, it really wasn’t that dramatic. However, I am excited about this concealer, and getting excited about a concealer gets me even more excited. I can see why a lot of people would dislike this concealer, but it has exactly what I was looking for: medium-coverage, a natural finish, easy to blend, and long-wearing.

It claims to be a “full-coverage concealer in an oil-free, ultra-lightweight cream formula that blurs imperfections as it conceals, smoothing the look of skin with a soft-matte, natural-looking finish.” I agree that the formula is lightweight, it blurs imperfections, and it makes the skin look smoother, but it is not full-coverage. You will like this if you prefer a more natural look. If you want flawless looking skin, this is not the concealer for you.

Here are some swatch comparisons. The Soft Matte shades tend to run darker than the Radiant Creamy shades, but Canelle somehow ended up working perfectly on my skin. It’s actually lighter than Custard once it’s blended out.

Any concealer will cling to dry flakes, but I find that this concealer looks nice over dry areas on my face and doesn’t create dry patches. It holds up well over the normal areas of my face. The oily areas of my face are still oily after a long day (as they usually are), but this concealer is still there. Even though my skin gets so oily that you can see your reflection on my forehead somedays (I wish that was an exaggeration), the concealer doesn’t break up or slide around! That’s a rare occurrence for me, so I’m happy with it. I wore this with a variety of primers, powders, and foundations, and the concealer played nicely. One day I added too much concealer on a spot on my forehead and it creased after I added powder, but I haven’t had any other issues with it.

I would definitely recommend this for those who need light to medium coverage, or those who need higher coverage yet still want a natural look. Just don’t expect it to control oil, cover every zit, or fold your laundry. Have you tried this concealer? Let me know!

  1. Good to know that it works well over dry patches! I have a bit if textured skin under my eyes, do you think it would work well there or can it accentuate texture (not necessarily dry patches)? 🙂
